Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally resigned from his position in the Federal Government, signaling a major political development ahead of the next electoral cycle.

His resignation, conveyed in a letter dated April 22, 2026, was addressed to President Bola Tinubu and will take effect on April 30, 2026.

According to the letter, which was transmitted through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Adelabu stated that the timing of his exit is intended to ensure a smooth and orderly transition within the Ministry of Power.

He expressed gratitude to the president for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as one defined by dedication to national development, particularly within Nigeria’s critical electricity sector.

Adelabu highlighted his contributions to ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening power generation and distribution across the country.

He noted that improving electricity supply remains central to Nigeria’s industrial growth and broader economic advancement, adding that it was a privilege to play a role in shaping policies within the sector.

The former minister explained that his resignation is primarily driven by his intention to fully commit to his governorship ambition in Oyo State.

He emphasized that his decision is in compliance with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, which mandates that political office holders step down from their positions before contesting elective offices.

Adelabu also reflected on his longstanding political aspirations, recalling that he previously resigned as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018 to pursue the same governorship ambition.

His renewed bid is expected to significantly reshape the political landscape in Oyo State, where he is widely regarded as a leading contender in the forthcoming election.

His departure from the federal cabinet marks not only the end of his tenure in the power sector but also the beginning of what is anticipated to be a highly competitive race for leadership in one of Nigeria’s key states.
