Senate President Godswill Akpabio has vehemently denied reports alleging an impeachment plot against him, labeling the claims as “fake news” propagated by mischief-makers.
His comments came during a Senate plenary session on Tuesday, in response to a report from an unspecified outlet that claimed armed operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) had taken control of the National Assembly premises to thwart an alleged impeachment attempt.
“Let me make it clear: there is no truth to this claim,” Akpabio stated firmly.
“The Senate is peaceful, and no section of the parliament is discussing any impeachment of its leadership.”
He urged the public to disregard the fabricated story and cautioned against the spread of false information, which he suggested aimed to create unnecessary panic and discord.
“We are sitting here, doing our work in peace, oblivious to the mischief being peddled.
This is simply fake news,” he added while addressing the plenary.
In an effort to address the situation, Akpabio referred the matter to the Senate Committee on Public Services for further investigation, emphasizing the need for legislative action in response to the growing issue of misinformation.

“We understand that some people get paid for generating traffic with fake stories,” he remarked, adding humorously, “Which committee do we refer this to?”
His light-hearted comment elicited laughter from members of the chamber.
Jackson Udom, one of Akpabio’s media aides, supported the Senate President’s assertions, stating, “There will be no impeachment move against Godswill Akpabio. Beware of fake news websites.”
Udom further clarified that the Senate session was ongoing, with Akpabio presiding since 11 a.m., dispelling any insinuations of unrest or disruption in the legislative process.
This exchange underscores the growing concerns regarding misinformation, with Akpabio urging heightened vigilance and caution within the media landscape.
