Arsenal and Manchester City will meet at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday as they battle for the 2026 FA Community Shield and an early piece of silverware ahead of the new English football season.

The fixture, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. BST (2:00 p.m. WAT) on August 16, will pit Premier League champions Arsenal against FA Cup winners Manchester City. The Football Association has confirmed that the match will serve as the traditional curtain-raiser for the 2026/27 campaign.

The encounter will also mark a significant change of venue. Instead of its traditional home at Wembley Stadium, the Community Shield will be played in Cardiff because Wembley is unavailable due to pre-planned concerts. It is the first time in 20 years that the fixture has returned to the Welsh capital.

The Principality Stadium previously hosted the Community Shield on six occasions between 2001 and 2006, during the period when Wembley was unavailable for major football fixtures.

Arsenal head into the match as reigning Premier League champions after ending a 22-year wait for the league title last season.

Manager Mikel Arteta is targeting another strong start and has confirmed that key players including Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martin Zubimendi are available for the fixture.

The match also provides Arsenal with an opportunity to build momentum before beginning their Premier League title defence against Coventry City on August 21.

For Manchester City, the Community Shield represents the first opportunity for new head coach Enzo Maresca to compete for silverware since replacing Pep Guardiola.

City qualified as FA Cup winners and will be seeking to claim the Community Shield for the first time since 2024. The club has also confirmed that the match will kick off at 3 p.m. BST.

Maresca has already indicated that he is treating the fixture seriously rather than viewing it simply as a pre-season exercise. His side will face an Arsenal team that has spent much of the summer preparing to defend its league crown.

Although the Community Shield is often regarded as a traditional season opener, Sunday’s meeting carries additional significance for both clubs.

For Arsenal, victory would provide an early reward after their Premier League triumph and offer Arteta an opportunity to assess his squad ahead of another demanding campaign.

For City, the match is the beginning of the Maresca era and an early indication of how the team will adapt following Guardiola’s departure.

The game will also feature VAR, with Sam Barrott appointed as referee.

With both clubs entering the contest after major changes and high expectations, the Cardiff showdown is set to provide an intriguing first competitive test before the 2026/27 Premier League season gets fully underway.
