Former England international Ashley Cole has been appointed head coach of Italian Serie B side Cesena FC, marking his first role as a senior manager.

Speaking at his unveiling, the ex-Chelsea FC and Arsenal FC defender expressed frustration at what he described as limited opportunities in English football, saying aspiring coaches are often blocked by a lack of experience requirements that are difficult to overcome.

Cole, who signed a short-term deal running until June 2026, takes over following the departure of former coach Michele Mignani, with the club still in contention for a promotion playoff spot.

The 45-year-old said he had grown discouraged after multiple unsuccessful attempts to secure a managerial role in England despite years of experience as an assistant coach. He argued that clubs often demand experience without providing opportunities for emerging managers to gain it.

Cole also highlighted the broader issue of representation, noting that few Black English coaches are currently managing at senior levels in European football. He described his appointment in Italy as a significant opportunity and a step forward in breaking barriers.

The move represents a return to Italy for Cole, who previously played for AS Roma between 2014 and 2016. He said that experience has helped him adapt quickly to the environment and demands of Italian football.

Since retiring from professional football in 2019, Cole has built his coaching career working alongside several high-profile managers, including Frank Lampard at Derby County, Chelsea, and Everton, as well as Wayne Rooney at Birmingham City. He also worked with Lee Carsley within England’s national team setup

Cole inherits a side pushing for a top-eight finish required to secure a playoff place. Following a recent defeat, he acknowledged the need for improved attacking efficiency and results as the season enters its final stages.

His appointment signals both a new chapter in his coaching career and a broader statement about opportunities for emerging managers, as he looks to make an impact in Italian football while challenging perceptions back home.
