The Nigeria Police Force has removed Assistant Commissioner of Police, Benjamin Hundeyin, from his position as Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), barely six months after his appointment.

Sources within the police hierarchy confirmed on Thursday that the decision was approved shortly after Tunji Disu assumed office as the new Inspector-General of Police.

Disu officially took over leadership of the police on Wednesday following the removal of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.

A senior police source explained that the removal of Hundeyin is part of routine administrative adjustments typically implemented whenever a new Inspector-General takes charge of the force.

Such changes, according to the source, are aimed at allowing the new leadership to reconstitute strategic positions and align the force’s communication structure with its operational priorities.

Despite the development, the police authorities have yet to officially announce a replacement for the Force Public Relations Officer role.

Hundeyin, who was appointed Force spokesperson by Egbetokun, had served in several operational and administrative capacities within the police before taking up the national communications role.

Prior to his appointment as FPRO, he served as the Police Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Police Command and PRO of Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Onikan.

He also participated in international peacekeeping operations, serving with the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur in 2020.

The Lagos-born officer is an alumnus of Lagos State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language.

He later obtained a Master’s degree in Legal Criminology and Security Psychology from the University of Ibadan.

Observers within the security sector say the change signals the beginning of broader administrative restructuring under Disu’s leadership as the new police chief settles into office and reorganizes key units of the force.

Further announcements regarding new appointments within the police leadership structure are expected in the coming days.
