Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has claimed that Nigeria recorded approximately four million more births than the entire European Union in 2025, citing figures generated by his artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.

Musk made the statement in a post on his X account on Saturday, writing: “Nigeria alone had 4 million more births than the entire EU last year.”

According to data referenced by Grok, Nigeria recorded an estimated 7.8 million births in 2025, compared with about 3.5 million births across the European Union during the same period. The figures suggest that Nigeria had roughly four million more births than the 27-member EU bloc.

The comparison underscores Nigeria’s continued position as one of the world’s fastest-growing populations, with demographic expansion presenting both opportunities and significant development challenges.

Earlier this year, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced that about 14 million Nigerian children had their births officially registered over the previous two years, describing the achievement as a major step toward improving legal identity coverage for children in the country.

Despite its demographic growth, Nigeria continues to grapple with mounting economic pressures. World Bank data showed that the country’s poverty rate reached 63 percent in 2025, with millions of Nigerians facing rising living costs and persistent economic hardship.

Meanwhile, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, said during the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit that, for the first time, Nigeria’s economy was growing faster than its estimated population of 250 million.

The remarks come amid ongoing debates over the implications of Nigeria’s rapid population growth for economic development, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and employment.
