The National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially announced that Enugu State will host the 23rd edition of the National Sports Festival (NSF) in 2026.

The announcement was made by NSC Director-General, Bukola Olopade, in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.

According to Olopade, the decision followed a competitive bidding process, with Enugu emerging as the top contender. He emphasized that the coal city is well-positioned to deliver a world-class event that will showcase Nigeria’s sporting excellence.

The NSF, a biennial multi-sports event, brings together thousands of athletes from across the country, including all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The festival is celebrated for promoting sportsmanship, national unity, and sporting prowess.

Before Enugu’s turn in 2026, Ogun State is set to host the 22nd edition of the NSF in January 2025.

Olopade, who also serves as the former chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for Ogun 2025, confirmed that the state is prepared to host over 15,000 athletes.

He reaffirmed the NSC’s commitment to supporting Ogun in delivering a top-tier tournament.

Olopade highlighted that this will be the first time Enugu hosts the prestigious event since its inception in 1973.

The 21st edition of the NSF was held in Asaba, Delta State, where over 11,000 athletes participated.

With the announcement of Enugu as the next host, the NSC is optimistic about continuing the festival’s legacy of excellence, inclusivity, and the promotion of Nigerian sports talent.
