Kebbi State Polytechnic raises alarm over low student enrollment

Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari, has expressed concern over the low enrollment of students into the institution, which is seen as a significant challenge to its growth and development.

The Deputy Rector of the polytechnic, Mallam Sa’idu Aliyu-Dankolo, made this known on Wednesday during a courtesy visit to the Kebbi House of Assembly in Birnin Kebbi. Aliyu-Dankolo, accompanied by the institution’s management team and members of the Government Council, said the purpose of their visit was to bring the pressing issue of low student enrollment to the attention of the lawmakers.

Aliyu-Dankolo pointed out that despite the accreditation of several new courses, the polytechnic is still struggling with insufficient student intake.

Accredited courses include Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Science Laboratory Technology, Library and Information Science, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry – fields that should, in theory, attract more students.

He stressed that the low enrollment was jeopardizing the polytechnic’s future and requested the support of the Kebbi House of Assembly members in encouraging students from their constituencies to enroll, in an effort to alleviate the issue and contribute to the institution’s development.

“The low enrollment is posing a serious threat to the Polytechnic’s development.

We seek the support of the members of the House to encourage more students from their constituencies to enroll in the institution.

This would help in minimizing the problem and contribute to the overall development of the Polytechnic and the education sector,” Aliyu-Dankolo said.

In response, the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Mohammed Usman-Zuru, represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Muhammad Sama’ila-Bagudo, assured the polytechnic’s management of the assembly’s commitment to addressing the issue.

He urged the polytechnic leadership to identify the root causes of the low enrollment so that effective strategies could be devised to tackle the problem.

National Daily Newspaper reports that Kebbi State Polytechnic was established in 2014 by the administration of former Governor Saidu Dakingari, with the aim of providing higher education opportunities for the state’s indigent population.
