Nigerian content creator and comedian Adebayo Ridwan Abidemi, popularly known as Isbae U, has revealed how he came up with his popular interview series, Curiosity Made Me Ask, saying he created the show after deciding to move away from conventional skit-making.

Isbae U disclosed this during an interview with media personality Morayo Afolabi-Brown on The Morayo Show, which was shared on YouTube on Wednesday.

The content creator said he went through different creative pursuits, including singing, rapping and acting, while trying to establish his identity in the entertainment industry.

According to him, he eventually decided that he did not want to remain part of the growing community of skit makers and began searching for a concept that would distinguish him from others.

“I was just finding myself. I was at that process. Before that, I was singing, before that rapping. I was just finding myself,” he said.

Isbae U said the turning point came when he decided he wanted to create something different rather than remain “average”.

“There was a day I said to someone that I was done being mediocre, being average. I wanted to do something different. I didn’t want to just be considered part of them, part of the skit makers, one of them,” he said.

The content creator said his idea for Curiosity Made Me Ask was inspired by American comedian Zach Galifianakis’ interview series, Between Two Ferns.

He recalled watching the programme and realising that its unconventional interview format was something he could adapt.

“I saw a show that I used to watch a long time ago. It’s called Between Two Ferns by Zach Galifianakis. So when I saw the show, I loved it. I thought, ‘Oh, this is something I can do,’” he said.

Curiosity Made Me Ask has since featured several prominent Nigerians from the entertainment and public spheres, including veteran actors Pete Edochie and Jide Kosoko, singer Teni, entertainer Charly Boy and former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Isbae U explained that the show’s objective was not simply to conduct conventional celebrity interviews but to reveal sides of his guests that audiences may not ordinarily see.

“The idea of Curiosity Made Me Ask is to show you another part of this celebrity you’ve not seen,” he said.

The content creator also acknowledged that he sometimes becomes nervous before interviewing prominent personalities, particularly older and more established figures.

He said, however, that many of his guests had welcomed him and encouraged him to remain himself during the conversations.

“Every time. Especially when it comes to people that are way older than me,” he said when asked whether he still gets nervous before interviews.

His recent interview with former President Olusegun Obasanjo attracted significant attention online, with the conversation generating discussion about the former president’s lighter and more playful side.

Isbae U also disclosed that his creative work extends beyond what audiences see on Curiosity Made Me Ask. He said he writes stories and assists other creators with their content behind the scenes.

“A lot of people thought or think I have stopped creating and just doing Curiosity Made Me Ask. But low-key, there are people I write stories for, people I help with their stories,” he said.

He added that he plans to continue creating different forms of content as he develops his career in the entertainment industry.
