Manchester United are set to hijack the transfer of Romeo Lavia from Southampton, National Daily reports.

The Red Devils have emerged as surprise contenders in the race to sign the 19-year-old. United look to beat Liverpool to the midfielder’s signature.

United are reportedly considering a move for Lavia

The Belgian has attracted the attention of some of EPL giants after the Saints’ relegation to the Championship.

The Reds have already two rejected bids for the former Manchester City youngster. Liverpool’s bids have fallen short of Southampton’s asking price of around £50m for one of their most valuable assets.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are preparing a third bid closer to the Saints’ asking price for Lavia according to reports from Belgium – but the Anfield club are now set to face competition late in the battle to sign him.

National Daily learnt from the claim by The Independent that Manchester United now consider an attempt to gazump the deal by making a bid themselves.

Erik ten Hag is struggling to secure Moroccan midfielder, Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina. Lavia could be a younger, but may not be a cheaper alternative considering his around around £50m price tag.

Though Liverpool seem to be in more desperate need for a holding midfielder than United following Fabinho’s exit.

While, Ten Hag has Casemiro at his disposal in that position, Klopp cannot boast an obvious candidate for that role.
