MTN Nigeria has introduced eco-friendly, biodegradable SIM cards as part of its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieving net zero emissions by 2040 under its Project Zero initiative.
These paper-based SIM cards, made from 100% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper, mark a significant step towards sustainability by reducing plastic waste and promoting circular economy practices.
The new SIM cards, which are safer for the environment than traditional plastic ones, biodegrade naturally and are recyclable. This shift not only reduces the company’s carbon footprint but also addresses environmental issues related to plastic waste pollution, which is a growing concern globally.
Compared to the conventional Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic-based SIM cards, the biodegradable options help prevent plastic pollution and lower carbon emissions during production and disposal.
MTN’s eco-friendly SIM cards align with its broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy, which focuses on minimizing the company’s environmental footprint through responsible waste management practices.

The telecom giant is also responding to the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) recent plans to introduce mandatory sustainability reporting for telecom operators, reinforcing the industry’s growing focus on environmental consciousness.
Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Tobe Okigbo, emphasized the company’s ongoing efforts: “Our new eco-friendly SIM cards represent part of our continuous commitment to environmental responsibility, reducing waste, supporting local vendors, and integrating sustainability into both our operations and the lives of our customers.”
This move highlights the growing global trend among mobile operators to tackle the environmental impacts of plastic SIM cards, many of which end up polluting oceans and landfills.
By transitioning to biodegradable bioSIMs, MTN aims to encourage eco-conscious choices among consumers and create a more sustainable future for Nigeria.
