The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered the closure of the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri due to illegal drug activities and contamination caused by recent floods.
The flood disaster, triggered by the collapse of the Alau dam, has claimed the lives of thirty people and displaced over four hundred thousand residents in Maiduguri.
The market, submerged by the floodwaters, became a breeding ground for contaminated pharmaceuticals.
NAFDAC, in a statement on X, announced the closure and initiated a thorough investigation to remove compromised drugs from the market.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the flood has affected approximately 40% of the city, forcing people to flee their homes.

Meanwhile, in Ibadan, Oyo State, NAFDAC destroyed counterfeit goods worth ₦43 billion.
The items, including counterfeit medications, medical equipment, and other regulated goods, were destroyed at a landfill.
The agency stated that the counterfeit goods were voluntarily surrendered by businesses, trade unions, and NGOs.
NAFDAC conducted numerous searches and confiscated both registered and unregistered pharmaceutical products.
