Nigeria’s diplomatic community has been thrown into mourning following the death of ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away after a prolonged illness.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his death in a statement issued on Wednesday by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. According to the statement, Lele died in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, in Ankara, Turkey, where he had been receiving medical care.

Lele was recently appointed as Nigeria’s envoy to Algeria by President Bola Tinubu as part of a broad diplomatic reshuffle. Until his death, he served as director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the ministry, a role in which he played a key part in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy engagements in the region.

Born in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State in 1976, Lele was a graduate of Economics from Bayero University Kano. He joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001 and built a distinguished career spanning over two decades.

The ministry described him as a diplomat of “intellectual depth, strategic insight, and unwavering commitment” to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

“His sudden demise is a monumental loss not only to his immediate family but also to the entire Foreign Service community and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement noted.

The remains of the late diplomat were received on Tuesday at the international wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Ahmed, alongside directors and senior officials.

Ahmed described Lele as a hardworking, humble, and exemplary officer whose contributions to the ministry would be deeply missed.

Lele was laid to rest on Wednesday, April 22, in Kano State in accordance with Islamic rites. The ministry extended condolences to his family, associates, and the government and people of Bauchi State, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
