Obasanjo affirms Abeokuta roots, dismisses speculation over ancestry

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has firmly dismissed recurring speculation about his ancestry, insisting that his roots remain in Abeokuta and reaffirming his enduring connection to the Ogun State capital.

The former president made the clarification during a fireside conversation with veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, at the unveiling of the Charly Boy Foundation and the launch of the memoir, 999: A Memoir in Tribute to Late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, in Lagos.

Addressing what he described as persistent public speculation surrounding his origin, Obasanjo stated that there should be no ambiguity about his ancestry, stressing that his family’s ancestral home remains in Abeokuta.

According to the former president, his heritage is deeply rooted in the historic Ogun State city, where his family house still stands, a fact he said should settle recurring questions regarding his background.

Although the clarification was unrelated to the broader political issues discussed during the event, it reflected Obasanjo’s determination to dispel long-standing narratives about his identity while reflecting on key moments in his personal and public life.
