A renewed wave of violence has been reported in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau state, resulting in the death of a herdsman and the arrest of two suspects, security sources have confirmed.
The incident was disclosed in a post shared on X on Monday by security analyst Zagazola Makama, who said the attack occurred at about 11:55 a.m. on Sunday in the Makera area of the council.
According to the report, the assault not only claimed the life of the herder but also led to the death of six cattle, with approximately 20 others sustaining gunshot injuries. The latest episode is said to be part of a series of recent attacks recorded in the area, heightening concerns over persistent insecurity.
The development reportedly followed earlier violence in the same local government, where two local hunters were killed and another injured in a separate incident.
Security sources disclosed that troops operating under Operation ENDURING PEACE responded swiftly after receiving a distress call and immediately mobilized to the scene.
“On arrival, troops discovered that one herder had been killed, six cattle were shot dead, while several others sustained gunshot injuries,” the sources said.
The troops reportedly sighted some of the suspects fleeing towards the Golhoss community and pursued them. Two suspects were successfully apprehended, while others managed to escape.
The body of the deceased herdsman was later recovered and handed over to officials of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but security operations are said to be ongoing in the area to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks.
