Over 5,000 APC members, chieftains defect to APM in Adamawa ahead of 2027 elections
More than 5,000 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including party chieftains, have reportedly defected to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Adamawa State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The reported movement represents another development in the changing political landscape of Adamawa, where disagreements within political parties and the emergence of new alliances have continued to influence preparations for the next elections.
The APM has attracted attention in the state following the defection of businessman and former APC governorship aspirant, Abdulrahman Bashir Haske, who joined the party in September 2026 and secured its governorship ticket for the 2027 election.
Haske’s defection was announced at an event in Yola attended by APM leaders, political stakeholders and supporters drawn from the state’s 21 local government areas.
Another prominent APC figure, former Adamawa State House of Assembly Speaker Kabiru Mijinyawa, also resigned from the party in September following disagreements over the conduct of its House of Representatives primary. He was subsequently reported to be moving towards the APM.
The latest reported defection comes against the background of wider political movements in Adamawa, where Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in February 2026 triggered further changes in party alignments.
In October, chairmen of the state’s 21 local government areas and 226 councillors also left the PDP for the APC, according to reports and confirmation by the APC’s state publicity secretary, Victor Dogo.
The reported movement of APC members to the APM could further intensify political competition in Adamawa as parties position themselves for the 2027 governorship and other elections.
However, the identities of all the latest defectors, the locations involved and the circumstances surrounding their decision were not independently established in the reports reviewed.
