Police issue nationwide alert over possible attacks on churches, schools, NYSC camps

Security agencies across Nigeria have been placed on heightened alert following intelligence indicating that terrorists may be planning attacks on churches, schools, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable locations across the country.

The warning, issued by the Force Department of Operations in Abuja on September 13, cited increased terrorist mobilisation and alleged attempts by suspected ISWAP operatives and local collaborators to identify potential targets.

According to the alert, security agencies are particularly monitoring parts of the North-East, North-West, North-Central and South-West, as well as the movement of armed groups reportedly travelling from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State.

The warning comes as schools resume for the 2026/2027 academic session, placing renewed attention on the security of educational institutions and other locations where large numbers of people gather.

Police also raised concerns about the potential impact of terrorist activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that attacks could be used to create fear and disrupt public activities.

Following the alert, police commands nationwide have been directed to intensify patrols, strengthen security around vulnerable locations and increase surveillance at borders and other entry points.

Officers have also been instructed to work closely with school authorities, religious leaders and other stakeholders while urging members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements or activities to security agencies.
