Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has appealed to Nigerians to show compassion toward 19-year-old TikToker Mirabel, following her confession that the rape allegations she made last week were false.

Mirabel had claimed she was forcibly raped and injured with a blade, sparking national outrage. Activists and celebrities had vowed to seek justice on her behalf, while many Nigerians donated significant sums of money to support her.

However, doubts began to surface as inconsistencies in her story became apparent. The truth emerged after a telephone interview conducted by VDM on Thursday, during which Mirabel admitted that her claims were fabricated.

VDM shared details of the conversation, explaining how he carefully questioned Mirabel about the inconsistencies in her account. He noted that substance use may have influenced her perception, as she admitted to consuming codeine mixed with Sprite, a combination known to cause hallucinations.

In the video shared online, VDM asked: “You need to think very well so you don’t put yourself in deeper troubles. Codeine and alcohol can make you hallucinate… there is a possibility you used your own hands to cut yourself.”

Under questioning, Mirabel eventually broke down and confirmed that the alleged assault never occurred. She disclosed that she suffers from panic attacks and has a history of self-harm, which she had previously used to support her false claims.

She also admitted to creating a separate social media account to amplify her story and attract donations.

VDM called on Nigerians to forgive Mirabel and give her a chance to rebuild her life, highlighting the role of mental health in her actions. He urged the public to approach such situations with empathy while remaining vigilant against false claims.

The revelation has reignited conversations around social media responsibility, mental health awareness, and accountability, particularly when viral stories influence public opinion and charitable contributions.
