At least 20 residents have been confirmed dead following the tragic capsizing of two passenger boats in Lagos on Monday night.

The boats, each carrying 16 passengers, capsized after a collision around 7 PM at Imore Lagoon.

Details about the intended destination of the boats remain unclear.

Police spokesman SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the tragedy, stating that 11 passengers were rescued from the water.

According to the police, the boats involved in the  tragic incident were unregistered, and a report has been filed at the Ilashe Police Division.

Hundeyin noted that all 32 passengers and their belongings drowned when the boats capsized.

The rescue efforts involved the police, local divers, and emergency responders, who managed to save 11 individuals.

Those rescued sustained injuries and were quickly transported to the Naval Town Hospital in Ojo for medical treatment.

Search and rescue operations for the remaining victims are currently ongoing.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
