17 dead, several injured in Anambra stampede at Rice distribution event

At least 17 people have reportedly lost their lives and several others sustained injuries during a stampede that occurred on Saturday at a rice distribution event organized by the Obijackson Foundation in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The tragedy unfolded as large crowds gathered at the venue to receive palliatives, which included rice, vegetable oil, and cash donations.

The event, sponsored by Chief Ernest Obiejesi (popularly known as Obijackson), turned chaotic as people struggled to gain access to the distribution point.

Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes at the event, noting that most of the victims were women and children. Many were caught in the crush at the gate while attempting to enter amidst an uncontrollable crowd.

One eyewitness reported that numerous people collapsed during the chaos, with a critically injured woman rushed to the hospital. However, it remains unclear if she survived.

The scene at the venue was littered with shoes and slippers, abandoned by victims in the commotion.

“The crowd was massive and uncontrollable,” an eyewitness recounted. “People were pushing and shoving to get in, and many fell. It was heart-wrenching to see mothers and children caught up in the chaos.”

As of the time of filing this report, the police have not released an official statement on the incident.

This incident adds to a growing list of tragic stampedes in recent days. Earlier on Saturday, another stampede in Abuja claimed at least 10 lives, with others injured. A similar incident occurred just days ago in Ibadan, Oyo State, where 35 people lost their lives, leaving many more injured.

The series of stampedes highlights the urgent need for improved crowd control measures and safety protocols during large gatherings, especially those involving distribution of aid and palliatives.

Tragic events like these underscore the need for proper planning and management to prevent such loss of life in the future.
