The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has ruled out any chances of a 2027 presidential victory for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing his ambition as unrealistic.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, April 16, 2026, Wike said the presidency is “not available” to Atiku, whom he portrayed as a frequent contender who has failed in previous bids.

The remarks come as opposition figures intensify efforts to form alliances, reportedly around the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.

Wike, who has been at odds with Atiku since the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries, criticised the former vice president’s repeated attempts to secure the presidency.

According to him, Atiku’s continued criticism of the current administration would not erase what he described as his past electoral record. He added that the former vice president should reconsider his political future rather than focus on 2027.

The minister also suggested that Atiku’s involvement in emerging political coalitions, allegedly alongside figures such as Rauf Aregbesola and Rotimi Amaechi reflects an attempt to remain politically relevant.

Wike used the opportunity to restate his support for President Tinubu, dismissing speculation about any personal presidential ambition.

He said his priority remains the development of the Federal Capital Territory, pointing to ongoing infrastructure projects as evidence of progress under the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

The comments further underscore divisions within the opposition, particularly within the PDP, where internal disagreements have persisted since the last election cycle.

Meanwhile, the ADC seen by some as a potential platform for a broader opposition coalition continues to face internal and legal challenges, including disputes over its leadership structure.

With nearly two years to the next general election, political tensions are already rising, marked by sharp exchanges among key figures. Analysts say the 2027 race could be shaped not only by policy debates but also by ongoing rivalries within and across party lines.

As of the time of filing this report, Atiku Abubakar’s media team has not issued an official response to Wike’s remarks.
