Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Malick Yalcouyé has become the subject of widespread online discussion following his appearance against Chelsea, with social media users questioning whether the Ivorian footballer is genuinely 20 years old.

Yalcouyé attracted significant attention after scoring against Chelsea, but much of the conversation surrounding the Brighton youngster quickly shifted from his performance on the pitch to speculation about his age and physical appearance.

The controversy prompted his former youth club in Ivory Coast, ASEC Mimosas, to intervene by releasing a collection of archive photographs documenting Yalcouyé’s development from his academy years through to 2026.

According to the club, the move was intended to provide context and help end what it described as unnecessary controversy and unhealthy debate surrounding the player’s age.

ASEC Mimosas Publishes Years of Archive Images

ASEC Mimosas released images spanning the period from 2018 to 2026, showing Yalcouyé at different stages of his football development.

The archive material is aimed at demonstrating the midfielder’s progression through the Ivorian academy system and his subsequent development into a professional footballer.

The club said it wanted to rely on documented records rather than allow speculation on social media to dominate the discussion.

The images have since attracted attention online as supporters and football followers examine the youngster’s appearance at different ages.

Alopecia Adds to Physical Appearance Debate

Yalcouyé’s appearance has also been discussed because he has reportedly experienced chronic alopecia from a young age.

Alopecia is a condition associated with hair loss, and the midfielder’s lack of hair has contributed to some of the online comments about his appearance and perceived age.

However, physical appearance alone is not a reliable means of determining a person’s age, particularly in professional sport, where athletes can have markedly different physical development.

The renewed scrutiny has therefore raised broader concerns about the tendency for social media users to question the ages of African footballers based largely on appearance.

From Ivory Coast to the Premier League

Yalcouyé developed through the ASEC Mimosas academy, one of Ivory Coast’s prominent football development institutions, before making the move into European football.

His progress eventually led him to Brighton, where he has continued his development at Premier League level.

His goal against Chelsea brought renewed attention to his footballing ability, but the subsequent online debate has overshadowed what was otherwise a significant moment in his emerging career.

ASEC Mimosas’ decision to publish the archive photographs appears designed to shift the conversation back towards the player’s documented football journey rather than speculation about his personal details.

The club’s message also reflects the increasing difficulty young African footballers face when social media discussions turn their physical appearance into a subject of public debate.

With Yalcouyé continuing to establish himself in English football, his performances will likely remain the most important measure of his progress.

For now, however, the archive released by ASEC Mimosas has provided a visual record of the midfielder’s development while the club seeks to bring an end to what it considers an unnecessary controversy.
