Yobe govt ranks 12th in FG’s first climate governance ranking

The Yobe State Government has been ranked 12th position among the 36 states of Nigeria in the Federal Government’s 2024 Climate Governance Performance Ranking.

Governor Mai Mala Buni’s Senior Special Assistant on Digital and Strategic Communications, Yusuf Ali disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

According to Ali, the ranking was carried out by the Federal Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Society for Planet and Prosperity, SPP, during a high-level event held in Abuja.

He said the ranking was based on five parameters, including climate change institutional arrangements and administrative structures.

Others were climate policy and action plan, climate budget and finance, implementation and monitoring, and online visibility concerning climate action.

He explained that following the assessment, “Yobe State ranked 12th position, reflecting its commitment to addressing climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.”

On his part, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawan, who chaired the event noted that the ranking was the first ever rating of climate governance performance among states.

He explained that the ranking aimed at “promoting climate awareness and encouraging greater action at the subnational level.”

The minister commended the state government and other high-performing states for their significant strides in the climate change action.

Also speaking, the President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Society for Planet and Prosperity, SPP, Professor Chukwumerije Okereke, explained that the project followed the successful mapping of climate impacts, policies and action plans at the subnational level.

He said: “This evaluation, completed in collaboration with the Department of Climate Change and the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, aims to enhance climate leadership at the state level by using standard metrics and rating criteria.”
