10 Injured as speeding car crashes into tricycles in Lagos

At least ten people were injured on Monday morning after a speeding car lost control and crashed into two commercial tricycles along Ipaja Road in the Alimosho area of Lagos State.

The accident occurred around 8:50 a.m. near Federal Bus Stop, causing heavy traffic disruption and prompting a swift response from emergency responders and traffic management officials.

Eyewitnesses said a Honda sedan with registration number KTU 921 JY, driven by an unidentified woman, was moving at high speed inbound Ipaja when the driver attempted to swerve to avoid a street sweeper working with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

The sudden maneuver reportedly led to the vehicle striking the sanitation worker before veering across the median into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with two commercial tricycles, commonly known as Keke Napep, which were picking up passengers at the time.

The impact left the tricycles badly damaged, with about ten passengers sustaining injuries ranging from fractures and deep cuts to minor bruises. The LAWMA worker also reportedly sustained injuries.

Officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), police officers from the Gowon Divisional Headquarters, and members of the Lagos State Neighborhood Watch arrived at the scene to rescue victims and restore order.

The injured were first taken to a nearby private hospital for emergency treatment before several were transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, due to the severity of their conditions.

Traffic officials later cleared the wreckage, towing away the damaged vehicle and tricycles to the police station to reopen the busy Ipaja corridor.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the crash, while also reiterating warnings to motorists about the dangers of speeding on busy urban roads in Lagos.
