At least 11 people have been killed following a late-night attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters on a rural community in Borno State, raising fresh concerns about security in areas previously considered relatively safe.
The assault occurred on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in Pubagu, a village located on the outskirts of the Sambisa Forest. Residents said gunmen stormed the community under cover of darkness, opening fire on civilians and setting homes and food supplies ablaze.
Local authorities confirmed that 11 residents were killed in the attack, while at least two others sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at a nearby medical facility.
Speaking after the incident, a local government official described the attack as unprecedented for the area, noting that Pubagu had largely avoided the worst of the insurgency in recent years.
The incident has heightened fears among residents, many of whom had relocated to the village believing it was safer than other parts of the region affected by years of conflict.
Security experts say the attack highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in rural communities situated close to insurgent enclaves. While major towns such as Maiduguri have seen increased military presence, smaller settlements remain exposed to sudden raids.
Military sources indicated that the attackers likely exploited the village’s proximity to the forest to carry out a swift “hit-and-run” operation before security forces could respond.
The timing of the assault, just as farmers prepare for the planting season, has also raised concerns about its potential impact on food production and livelihoods in the region.
The attack comes days after the military reported successes in operations targeting insurgents in the North-East, including a recent offensive around the Lake Chad Basin. Despite these gains, officials acknowledge that remnants of insurgent groups continue to pose a threat to vulnerable communities.
Security forces have since intensified patrols and launched search operations in surrounding areas to track down those responsible.
Meanwhile, the attack has left residents in shock, with some families reportedly considering relocation amid fears of further violence. Authorities have urged vigilance while efforts continue to restore security in the affected area.
