A 13-year-old schoolboy has allegedly stabbed a teacher to death and injured another teacher and a pupil in a knife attack at a primary school in northwestern Slovakia.

The attack occurred on Tuesday morning, September 29, 2026, at a school in Staškov, a small town near the Czech and Polish borders.

According to the Associated Press (AP), the suspect was taken into police custody following the incident. Authorities said the situation was under control and there was no further threat to the public.

The victim, a 61-year-old female teacher, died from her injuries, while the two injured victims, a 41-year-old teacher and a pupil, were taken to hospital.

The pupil was reportedly in critical condition, while the injured teacher sustained serious injuries. However, authorities said the teacher’s life was not in danger.

Slovak police confirmed that they were investigating the incident, although the motive for the attack had not been established as of Tuesday.

Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok, Education Minister Tomáš Drucker and Health Minister Kamil Šaško visited the town following the attack.

President Peter Pellegrini expressed sadness over the incident and extended his condolences to the victims’ families.

He described the attack as a serious warning to Slovak society, calling for greater calm, respect and mutual understanding.

Prime Minister Robert Fico also expressed condolences to the families of those affected, saying he was following developments with concern.

The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents involving students in Slovak schools.

In January 2025, an 18-year-old student fatally stabbed a deputy principal and another student at a secondary school in Spišská Stará Ves in northeastern Slovakia. Another pupil was also injured in the attack.

In 2020, a 22-year-old former student attacked a secondary school in Vrútky, killing a deputy principal and injuring five other people, including two students.

The latest incident has renewed concerns about school safety in the Central European country.
