Adebayo hails Nigerians abroad, says leadership fuels negative image

Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has praised Nigerians for what he described as their honesty, compassion and strong work ethic, while blaming the country’s leadership for creating a negative perception of its people.

Adebayo made the remarks while reflecting on his experiences working with Nigerians and people from other countries.

The presidential candidate said his international exposure had given him the opportunity to interact with people from different backgrounds, adding that he had rarely regretted employing Nigerians.

“I have travelled, and you can check the record: I have a legitimate right to live and work in 21 countries by virtue of my professional work and investments,” Adebayo said.

He argued that his experience had convinced him that Nigerians generally demonstrate a high level of honesty and compassion.

“Rarely have I regretted hiring Nigerians to work for me,” he said.

“Nigeria has more honest people than Britain, than Americans, than anything. Nigerians have a heart of compassion. We are good people, but our leaders are the worst example.”

Adebayo’s comments draw a distinction between the character of ordinary Nigerians and the conduct of political leaders, suggesting that the country’s leadership has contributed significantly to the negative perception of Nigeria at home and abroad.

His remarks also challenge the frequently held view that Nigeria’s social and economic problems are primarily a reflection of the character of its citizens.

According to the SDP candidate, Nigerians working and living outside the country are often able to demonstrate qualities that contradict some of the negative stereotypes associated with the country.

His reference to his professional and investment activities in 21 countries was used to emphasise his claim of having extensive international experience.

Adebayo, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the SDP platform, has continued to position himself as an advocate for changes in Nigeria’s political and governance system.

The statement comes amid persistent debates over corruption, public accountability, institutional performance and Nigeria’s international reputation.

While Adebayo presented his assessment as a reflection of personal experience, his comparison between Nigerians, Britons and Americans is a broad generalisation rather than a measurement based on comparative data.

Nevertheless, his central argument was that Nigerians should not be defined by the failures of political leadership.

He maintained that ordinary citizens possess qualities that can contribute to national development if supported by effective leadership and functioning institutions.

The comments are likely to fuel discussion about the relationship between leadership, national reputation and the behaviour of citizens, particularly as political parties and their candidates continue to debate the causes of Nigeria’s development challenges.
