AFCON 2027: Why Tanzania’s results still matter in Nigeria’s qualification group
The qualification format for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations has drawn attention to the status of Tanzania in Group L, with the East African nation already guaranteed a place at the tournament as one of the three co-hosts.
Despite its automatic qualification, Tanzania will still participate fully in the qualifying campaign, with its results counting in the Group L standings. However, only one team other than Tanzania will qualify from the group.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the general qualifying rule provides for the top two teams in each group to advance to the 2027 finals.
An exception applies to Groups D, H and L, which contain the three co-hosts — Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, respectively. In those groups, only the highest-ranked team outside the host nation will secure the additional qualification ticket.
Nigeria are in Group L alongside Tanzania, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, with all four teams scheduled to play six home-and-away matches during the qualifying campaign.
Tanzania’s automatic qualification does not remove the country from the group competition. Its results remain part of the standings and can influence which of the other three nations finishes as the highest-ranked non-host side.
The impact was evident from the opening matches.

Guinea-Bissau defeated Tanzania 2-0 in Dar es Salaam, while Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo. CAF subsequently confirmed that Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria made winning starts to the campaign.
The second matchday further changed the picture, with Guinea-Bissau defeating Nigeria 3-0 to move to six points from two matches, while Madagascar faced Tanzania. CAF described Guinea-Bissau as taking control of the race for the sole qualification place available to the non-host nations in Group L.
The qualification equation is straightforward: Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are effectively competing for one available ticket.
If Tanzania finish at the top of the group, the highest-ranked team among the other three nations will qualify alongside the hosts.
If Tanzania finish below the other three teams, the highest-ranked non-host nation will still take the qualification place.
Therefore, matches involving Tanzania remain significant because points gained or dropped against the co-hosts could ultimately affect the final ranking among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar.
CAF has specifically stated that Tanzania are already assured of their place at the finals, while the highest-ranked non-host team in Group L will join them.
For Nigeria, this makes every Group L fixture important, including their meetings with Tanzania. Points collected against the co-hosts could prove decisive when the three non-host nations are separated at the end of the qualifying campaign.
The 2027 AFCON PAMOJA tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027, with the three host nations already guaranteed places in the finals.
