The Nigerian Police have reportedly arrested a woman in Anambra State following allegations that she sexually exploited her seven-year-old daughter and exposed the child to explicit online content.

The arrest followed the circulation of a disturbing livestream allegedly involving the child, which prompted public outrage and calls for authorities to intervene and protect the minor.

According to reports, the woman allegedly used the child in sexually exploitative online material, with claims that the content was produced for financial gain.

Police authorities are said to have traced and arrested the suspect following investigations into the livestream.

She is reportedly being held in police custody while investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether other individuals were involved.

Reports also indicate that the suspect allegedly told investigators that the material had been generated using artificial intelligence (AI). The claim is expected to form part of the ongoing investigation, including efforts to establish the authenticity and origin of the material circulated online.

The case has generated widespread condemnation, with Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate legal action if the allegations are established.

Child-protection advocates have also stressed the need for the seven-year-old girl to receive immediate protection, appropriate care and professional support.

The incident has renewed concerns about the exploitation of children through digital platforms, particularly the use of social media and online content for financial gain.

Authorities are expected to determine whether the material constitutes a criminal offence under Nigeria’s child-protection and cybercrime laws and whether other persons participated in producing, distributing or monetising the alleged content.

As investigations continue, child-protection concerns remain paramount, with calls for authorities to ensure that the identity and privacy of the minor are protected throughout the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.

The police have not, at the time of reporting, publicly released detailed findings from the investigation or confirmed the full circumstances surrounding the allegations.
