Fulham head coach Álvaro Arbeloa has backed Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey to emerge as a leader at the club ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Spaniard’s faith in the 26-year-old was highlighted when Bassey wore the captain’s armband in Fulham’s final two pre-season matches against Málaga and Stuttgart.

Arbeloa believes Bassey’s defensive ability, work ethic and personality make him an ideal fit for his tactical approach.

“I see Calvin as a proper player, a top player for the style of play I want at Fulham,” Arbeloa said after the match against Stuttgart.

“To defend so high with a lot of space in behind, he has everything, and I think he’s a top player.

“He’s a funny guy, but when we have to work, he’s the first one. I really love him, and I want him to be our leader.”

Bassey has established himself as one of Fulham’s key defenders since joining the club from Ajax in 2023 following spells in Scotland and the Netherlands.

The Nigeria international made 30 Premier League appearances last season, starting 28 matches.

He was also named Fulham’s Player of the Season in the 2024/25 campaign after making 35 Premier League appearances.

Arbeloa, who took charge of Fulham ahead of the new season, has worked closely with Bassey throughout pre-season and appears keen to give him greater responsibility within the squad.

The defender is now being viewed alongside Sander Berge, Antonee Robinson and goalkeeper Bernd Leno as part of the experienced group expected to provide leadership for Fulham’s younger players.
