Babaloja Orders Market Shutdown Ahead of Olubadan Coronation

In a sweeping directive that underscores the cultural significance of Ibadan’s royal institution, the Babaloja of Oyo State, Asiwaju Yekeen Abass, has ordered the shutdown of all markets within the eleven local government areas of Ibadan metropolis in honour of the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, set for Saturday.

The decision, he explained, is a mark of respect for the ancient stool of the Olubadan, a position steeped in history and revered across Yorubaland. Abass, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said traders are expected to comply fully to give the city a serene and dignified atmosphere for the epoch-making ceremony.

“This coronation is not just Ibadan’s affair; it is the pride of all Yoruba people. We are shutting the markets so that traders, artisans, and residents can participate fully and pay homage to tradition. It is a day that must reflect total honour to our revered monarch,” he declared.

The coronation, which will attract dignitaries from across Nigeria and the diaspora, has already heightened anticipation within the ancient city. Security agencies, cultural groups, and civic organisations are reportedly putting final touches to logistics to ensure a smooth and colourful outing.

Market leaders, while acknowledging the economic inconvenience of a full-day closure, have expressed solidarity with the Babaloja’s directive, noting that cultural pride outweighs temporary business concerns.

The Olubadan stool, known for its unique succession system where every chief has a pathway to the throne, has long been celebrated as a model of order and inclusivity in Yoruba traditional rulership. The upcoming coronation, therefore, represents not just the ascension of a monarch, but the reaffirmation of Ibadan’s cultural heritage and unity.

As Saturday approaches, Ibadan’s skyline is awash with banners, drums, and decorations, while indigenes at home and abroad prepare to witness another page turned in the city’s rich history. For many, the market shutdown is a small sacrifice for the grandeur of tradition.
