The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is gathering momentum, with football fans eagerly awaiting the official announcement of the 30-man shortlist expected to be released by France Football in August.

The organizers of football’s most prestigious individual award are also expected to notify their global panel of journalists of the voting schedule as preparations begin for this year’s edition.

Although the official nominees have yet to be unveiled, several players have emerged as leading contenders following outstanding performances during the award’s evaluation period, which runs from August 1, 2025, to July 31, 2026.

Among the standout names tipped to feature prominently is Barcelona teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane.

Yamal Chasing Historic Milestone

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is widely regarded as one of the favourites after another remarkable campaign for club and country.

The 19-year-old helped Barcelona win the LaLiga title before playing a key role in Spain’s international success, putting himself in contention to become the youngest Ballon d’Or winner in football history.

Mbappe’s Stellar Year

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe also strengthened his credentials with another prolific season.

The France captain enjoyed an impressive FIFA World Cup campaign, finishing with 10 goals to claim the tournament’s Golden Ball, while also securing the LaLiga Pichichi Trophy as the league’s highest goalscorer.

Mbappe further enhanced his reputation by extending his record as the player with the most World Cup goals in history.

Kane’s Goal-Scoring Brilliance

England captain Harry Kane rounds off the trio of leading contenders after enjoying the most prolific club season among football’s elite.

The Bayern Munich striker scored an astonishing 61 goals during the 2025-26 campaign, helping the German champions secure both the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal.

His remarkable goal return has placed him firmly in contention for the Ballon d’Or, despite stiff competition from Europe’s biggest stars.

With the official shortlist set to be unveiled in August, the battle for football’s highest individual honour is expected to intensify as supporters and pundits debate who deserves to lift the coveted Golden Ball.
