Breaking:Nollywood mourns veteran actor Francis Duru, ‘Rattlesnake’ Star, dies at 57
Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Francis Duru, best known for his portrayal of Ahanna in the 1990s classic Rattlesnake.
Duru died at the age of 57 after a brief illness, according to an announcement by his family on his verified Instagram page on Friday, October 23, 2026.
The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) also confirmed his death, prompting an outpouring of grief among colleagues, filmmakers and fans who celebrated his contributions to the Nigerian entertainment industry.
The family did not disclose the nature of his illness but appealed for prayers and understanding as relatives and loved ones come to terms with the loss.
Duru’s death marks the end of a career spanning more than three decades, during which he established himself as a versatile actor in Nigerian film and television.
He began his acting career in 1989 with Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. However, he gained widespread recognition in the mid-1990s for playing Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed production by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.
The film became one of the defining productions of Nollywood’s early home-video era, and Duru’s performance remained one of his most memorable screen appearances.
Beyond Rattlesnake, his film credits included Blood Money (1997), Upside Down, Home in Exile, Nnenda, Stigma and Mboputa.
Born into a generation of performers who helped shape the Nigerian film industry, Duru combined professional experience with formal training. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1996.

His contributions extended beyond acting. In 2007, he received the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in recognition of his influence on young people. He also served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010.
In 2020, Duru won the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
He was also associated with humanitarian and development initiatives focused on children’s education and welfare, including activities linked to organisations such as UNICEF, USAID, LEAP Africa and COMPASS.
Duru was married to Adokiye Duru, and the couple had four children. The family suffered a devastating loss in 2024 when their 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, died following an illness. The actor publicly mourned his son, drawing condolences from colleagues and members of the entertainment community.
His death comes months after he dismissed social media reports claiming he was critically ill. In June 2026, he described a viral video and claims about his health as false and misleading, reassuring fans that the reports did not reflect his condition.
The illness that preceded his death has not been publicly identified, and funeral arrangements had not been announced as of the time of filing this report.
Duru’s passing represents a significant loss for Nollywood, particularly for audiences who remember the films that helped establish the industry’s popularity during the 1990s.
From his defining role as Ahanna to his subsequent performances and professional service, his career spanned several stages of Nigerian cinema and television.
He is survived by his wife and children, as well as colleagues, friends and generations of fans who followed his work.
