Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has revealed that Marcus Rashford was substituted during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Everton after the forward began feeling a minor physical issue.

Rashford started the match at Hill Dickinson Stadium and produced a lively performance on the left side of United’s attack before being replaced in the 70th minute.

Asked about the decision after the match, Carrick said Rashford was “feeling a bit of something”, prompting the decision to take him off as a precaution. The manager indicated that the issue was not considered serious.

The England international had been one of United’s more influential attacking players before his withdrawal, with his combination play with Luke Shaw particularly effective during the game. Carrick praised Rashford’s performance and said he had looked sharp.

Manchester United twice appeared on course for victory but ultimately had to settle for a point after Everton scored a dramatic late equaliser.

Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead shortly after half-time with a powerful individual effort, but Everton responded through Tyrique George in the 83rd minute.

Benjamin Šeško then restored United’s advantage with an 88th-minute header, seemingly putting Carrick’s side on course for an away victory.

However, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, making his Everton debut, produced a spectacular long-range strike in the sixth minute of stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw.

The result left United frustrated after twice surrendering a lead, while Everton maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign.

Carrick acknowledged that his side had done enough to put themselves in a winning position but failed to manage the closing stages of the match effectively.

United created several opportunities during the game, including a Bruno Fernandes effort that struck the crossbar, while their attacking players caused problems for the Everton defence.

“We put ourselves in a good position,” Carrick said after the match, expressing his disappointment at conceding so late.

The draw means United have taken four points from their opening three Premier League matches.

Rashford’s substitution will nevertheless be closely monitored by United ahead of their upcoming fixtures.

The forward has returned to the club after spending the previous season on loan at Barcelona and has started the new campaign looking to establish himself again at Old Trafford.

Carrick’s initial assessment that the problem is minor will provide some encouragement, although the club’s medical staff will determine whether Rashford is fit to feature in United’s next match.

United are due to begin their Champions League campaign against Sabah before returning to Premier League action against Manchester City.
