Chelsea captain Reece James undergoes surgery with no return date set
By Ihuoma Inyama
Chelsea captain Reece James has undergone surgery on a knee injury, but the club has yet to provide a timeframe for his return.
The 26-year-old suffered the injury during Chelsea’s 5–1 Premier League win over Bournemouth, ending what had been a relatively improved spell of fitness for the right-back.
According to BBC Sport, there is currently no indication of how long James will be sidelined as he begins his recovery.
The latest setback is another blow for a player who has struggled with recurring injuries in recent seasons. James made only 24 appearances in all competitions in the 2022–23 season and featured just 10 times the following campaign.

His fitness record improved in the last two seasons, with the defender making 32 appearances in 2024–25 and 39 last season. However, injuries have continued to disrupt his availability for both club and country.
Chelsea will now have to manage without their captain while waiting for more clarity on his recovery. Malo Gusto provides an alternative at right-back, while summer signing Marco Palestra is another option for the position.
James’ absence will be a concern for Chelsea, given his importance to the team when fully fit, but the club will hope his latest surgery can help him return to regular action.
