Christian leaders in Nigeria have expressed deep concern over what they describe as persistent attacks on churches and Christian communities in Plateau State and other parts of Northern Nigeria, calling on the federal and state governments to take urgent and decisive action to halt the violence.

The leaders, speaking through various religious platforms and Christian bodies, warned that continued insecurity in affected communities is deepening fear among residents and undermining religious harmony in the region.

Plateau State, which has experienced recurring episodes of communal violence and security challenges over the years, remains one of the areas where churches and rural settlements have frequently been reported as targets in broader cycles of attacks and reprisals.

Religious stakeholders urged security agencies to intensify intelligence-led operations and improve rapid response mechanisms to prevent further incidents. They also called for the protection of worship centres, which they say have increasingly become vulnerable during periods of unrest.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other faith-based groups have repeatedly raised concerns about insecurity in parts of the North, insisting that safeguarding lives and places of worship must remain a national priority.

They further appealed for improved coordination between federal and state security structures to address the root causes of recurring violence, including farmer-herder conflicts, communal tensions, and criminal activities.

The renewed calls come amid ongoing debates about security in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, where Plateau State is located, with stakeholders warning that unchecked violence could worsen displacement and humanitarian pressures.

Community leaders have also urged residents to remain calm and avoid reprisal actions, emphasizing dialogue and cooperation with security authorities.

Authorities are yet to issue a detailed response to the latest concerns raised by Christian leaders, but security agencies have in previous statements pledged continued operations aimed at restoring peace and stability in affected areas.

Observers say sustained intervention will be critical in addressing both immediate security threats and long-standing tensions in the region.
