Courtois Backs Mbappé for Ballon d’Or Despite Trophy Disappointment
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has backed Kylian Mbappé to win the Ballon d’Or, arguing that the French forward was the best individual performer during the year despite missing out on major trophies.
Speaking to DAZN on Wednesday, the Belgian international praised Mbappé’s performances but acknowledged that Real Madrid’s lack of silverware could weaken his chances of winning the prestigious individual award.

“Individually, no player was better than him this year, but sadly, we didn’t win any trophies,” Courtois said.
The goalkeeper also compared Mbappé’s campaign with that of Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, whose team’s trophy-winning success could strengthen his position in the Ballon d’Or race.
Courtois’ comments highlight the debate over whether individual performances or team achievements should carry greater weight when determining the winner of football’s most prestigious individual honour.
Mbappé’s chances will ultimately depend on how voters assess his individual contributions against the achievements of other leading contenders, including Yamal.
