Davido predicts Tinubu advantage in 2027 if opposition remains divided

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could have a significant advantage in the 2027 presidential election if opposition parties fail to unite behind a common candidate.

Davido made the assessment during an interview with News Central on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, while discussing Nigeria’s political climate and the outcome of the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.

The singer stressed that his assessment was not necessarily an expression of personal support for Tinubu but was based on what he described as the fragmented nature of the opposition.

According to Davido, the large number of politicians reportedly interested in contesting the presidency could work in Tinubu’s favour by dividing opposition votes and weakening efforts to produce a formidable challenger.

“If I had to bet, I would say Tinubu,” he said, explaining that his prediction was based on the current political configuration.

Davido specifically pointed to the number of presidential hopefuls from the southern part of the country.

“In the South alone, almost eight people want to be president. Why can’t all of you guys sit down together?” he asked.

He argued that opposition politicians could pose a much stronger challenge to the incumbent if they were able to set aside individual ambitions and rally around a single candidate.

“Because let me tell you, if there was a unified opposition, presidents might have a problem. But they’re not unified,” Davido said.

Despite his prediction of an advantage for Tinubu under the current circumstances, Davido said the outcome of the Osun governorship election had renewed his optimism about Nigeria’s political future.

He particularly highlighted the role of young Nigerians, whom he described as a major force capable of influencing political change.

“From what happened in Osun, there’s still hope,” he said, adding that Nigerian youths were increasingly becoming a decisive force in the country’s political process.

His comments come amid intensified political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition parties and political groups exploring possible alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Davido Clarifies Political Position

Davido has previously sought to distinguish his personal political views from those of his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who has publicly expressed support for President Tinubu.

The singer has maintained that his support for Adeleke during the Osun governorship election was primarily influenced by their family relationship and should not automatically be interpreted as an endorsement of a wider political platform.

He has also stated that he is not currently supporting any particular presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Davido has previously criticised aspects of Nigeria’s political system while insisting that citizens should be free to make their own political choices.

His latest comments therefore appear to be more of a political assessment of the emerging 2027 landscape than an outright endorsement of Tinubu.

The singer’s warning about opposition fragmentation comes as political parties and influential figures face growing pressure to overcome ideological, regional and personal differences if they hope to mount a coordinated challenge to the incumbent in 2027.
