Nigerian Fuji disc jockey, Kudirat Gbemisola, popularly known as DJ Kulet, has publicly opened up about her troubled past, revealing that she once struggled with homelessness and engaged in prostitution before finding stability and success in the entertainment industry.

The emotional disclosure was made during a church service on Sunday, where she gave a testimony recounting her journey from hardship to personal transformation.

Speaking before the congregation, DJ Kulet described her early years in Surulere, Lagos, as deeply challenging.

“I just want to say thank you, Jesus, because my story here in Surulere was a very bad one. Everybody knows me because I grew up in Lawanson. But I repent, and God removed me from the gutter,” she said.

In a video later shared on her Instagram page on Monday, the disc jockey elaborated on her experiences, stating that she had once been homeless and lived a life she now regrets.

She disclosed that during that period, she was widely known on the streets and survived through prostitution before eventually finding her footing in the music and DJ industry.

According to DJ Kulet, her early accommodation in Lagos began with a “face-me-I-slap-you” apartment secured through the support of a man she knew at the time. She said she later moved into a self-contained apartment as her DJ career began to generate income.

However, she recounted facing further hardship when she lived in a building that lacked basic facilities.

“For two years, the landlord did not fix the toilet, and I had to go around to relieve myself,” she said in her testimony.

Despite the setbacks, she said her career gradually improved, enabling her to upgrade to a four-bedroom ensuite apartment through her work as a DJ.

In what she described as a defining moment, DJ Kulet revealed that she eventually purchased her own home in Surulere in April last year — the same area where she once struggled.

“I did not sleep around to pay, and I paid in full with agent money,” she stated, attributing her turnaround to faith and perseverance.

Her testimony has since generated reactions on social media, with many followers praising her openness and describing her story as one of resilience and redemption.

Industry observers note that DJ Kulet’s candid account highlights broader social realities faced by many young women navigating economic hardship in urban centres, as well as the transformative potential of creative industries such as music and entertainment.

By publicly sharing her past, DJ Kulet said she hopes her journey will inspire others facing difficult circumstances to pursue change and believe in the possibility of a better future.
