Edo Police recover bodies of kidnap victims after N11m ransom payment
The Edo State Police Command has uncovered a tragic and disturbing development in an ongoing kidnapping investigation after two abducted victims, whose families reportedly paid ransom for their release, were found dead and buried in shallow graves in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of the state.
The discovery, which has shocked residents and heightened concerns over worsening insecurity, followed the arrest of a suspected member of a kidnapping syndicate believed to have played a role in the abduction.
According to police authorities, the suspect provided critical information during interrogation that led investigators to Isiukhu Community, where the remains of the victims were eventually recovered.
Security operatives reportedly carried out a coordinated operation in the area after receiving actionable intelligence from the arrested suspect. Upon arrival, officers located shallow graves where the victims had been secretly buried weeks after their abduction.

Police sources confirmed that the bodies were later exhumed, marking a grim conclusion to a case that initially raised hopes of safe rescue following ransom negotiations.
The victims were said to have been abducted earlier and held by their captors while their families desperately worked to secure their freedom. Reports indicate that a ransom payment of approximately N11 million was made in an attempt to secure their release. Despite the payment, the victims were allegedly never returned alive.
The development has deepened public anxiety over the activities of kidnapping gangs operating in parts of Edo State and across neighbouring regions, where ransom negotiations have increasingly become a painful reality for affected families.
Residents and community leaders have expressed concern over the rising sophistication and brutality of criminal networks, particularly cases in which victims are killed even after ransom payments are made.
The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of the bodies but stated that investigations are still ongoing. Authorities say further arrests are expected as operatives continue to track down other members of the suspected kidnapping gang linked to the crime.
Security agencies have intensified efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within forested and rural communities, as pressure mounts on law enforcement to curb the rising wave of kidnappings and violent crimes in the region.
The case remains under active investigation, with police assuring that all individuals connected to the incident will be brought to justice.
