EFCC arrests former Skye Bank chairman Tunde Ayeni over alleged N36.5bn, $30m fraud probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested businessman and former chairman of the defunct Skye Bank Plc, Tunde Ayeni, over allegations of multi-billion naira financial fraud.

Ayeni was reportedly picked up in Abuja and is currently in EFCC custody as investigators continue interrogations and documentation of the case.

According to preliminary details of the investigation, the anti-graft agency is probing the alleged diversion and misappropriation of funds estimated at ₦36.5 billion and $30 million. The funds are said to have been obtained from Polaris Bank through a network of companies allegedly linked to the businessman.

Sources familiar with the investigation said the EFCC is examining financial transactions, corporate records, and related bank documentation to determine the flow and utilization of the funds in question.

The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the commission to trace and recover suspected proceeds of financial misconduct involving individuals linked to collapsed or restructured financial institutions.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not issued an official public statement detailing the full scope of the allegations, and further updates are expected as investigations progress.
