Fleetwood stun Arsenal in penalty shootout to reach Carabao Cup quarter-finals
Fleetwood Town produced one of the biggest upsets in Carabao Cup history, defeating Premier League champions Arsenal in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
The fourth-tier side held Mikel Arteta’s men to a 1-1 draw before prevailing from the spot, sending their supporters into wild celebrations at Highbury Stadium.
Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Fleetwood a surprise lead in the 21st minute, taking advantage of Arsenal’s defensive vulnerability to beat goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
Arsenal, who were ranked 84 places above their opponents in the English football pyramid, struggled to turn their possession and attacking dominance into goals.
Viktor Gyokeres restored parity four minutes into the second half, scrambling the ball home from close range after the visitors increased the pressure following the interval.
Despite registering 26 shots and 59 touches inside Fleetwood’s penalty area, Arsenal managed only one goal and failed to find a winner during regulation time.
Their difficulties were compounded in the 86th minute when 16-year-old Max Dowman was sent off for kicking out at Harrison Neal following a heavy challenge. The dismissal left Arsenal with 10 men for the closing stages.
Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch then emerged as a central figure, producing two outstanding saves to deny Ben White and Martin Odegaard late in the game and force the tie into a penalty shootout.
Lynch continued his impressive performance by saving Bruno Guimaraes’ spot kick, giving Fleetwood a crucial advantage.
Ronan Coughlan, Neal, Will Davies, Andy Cannon and Conor Haughey converted their penalties for the hosts, with Haughey scoring the decisive kick to complete the remarkable victory.

The result triggered jubilant scenes, with supporters pouring onto the pitch as players and coaching staff celebrated the club’s unexpected achievement. Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor was visibly emotional during the celebrations.
The match had an unusual start, with referee Michael Salisbury briefly suspending play after spotting a drone flying above the stadium. Players were instructed to leave the pitch before the game resumed eight minutes later.
Arteta had made nine changes to the Arsenal team that defeated Everton on Saturday, fielding a combination of young prospects and players who have struggled for regular first-team opportunities.
The decision appeared to leave Arsenal short of the cohesion and cutting edge required to overcome determined opposition.
Marli Salmon, making only his second senior appearance for Arsenal, struggled to contain Loupalo-Bi for Fleetwood’s opener and was substituted at half-time.
Fleetwood’s defenders, including Rhys Bennett, Haughey and Shaun Rooney, put their bodies on the line to repel Arsenal’s repeated attacks and preserve their team’s chances of progressing.
The home supporters responded with chants mocking the Premier League champions as Fleetwood resisted mounting pressure.
For Arsenal, the defeat represents a disappointing cup exit, with their attacking wastefulness and Dowman’s dismissal contributing to a night they will want to forget.
Fleetwood, meanwhile, will discover their quarter-final opponents after the draw, scheduled to take place following Wednesday’s match between Chelsea and Liverpool
