Former INEC commissioner Kassim Geidam, emerges as Yobe Governorship candidate

The African Democratic Congress has unveiled former Independent National Electoral Commission official Kassim Gana Geidam as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 elections in Yobe State.

The announcement was made on Friday following a stakeholders’ meeting in Damaturu, where party leaders and delegates reportedly agreed to adopt Geidam as the party’s preferred candidate ahead of the election cycle.

The move is seen as a strategic effort by the ADC to strengthen its position in Yobe State and challenge the long-standing dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Geidam, who previously served as a Resident Electoral Commissioner with the Independent National Electoral Commission, is widely known for his experience in election administration and public service.

Political analysts say his emergence reflects a growing trend among opposition parties to field candidates with technocratic and administrative credentials as voters increasingly demand competence and governance reforms.

Party officials described the decision as part of a broader consensus strategy aimed at avoiding internal disputes and presenting a united front ahead of the 2027 governorship race.

According to insiders within the party, Geidam’s background in electoral management, combined with his local political network and administrative experience, made him a preferred choice among stakeholders.

Observers say the ADC’s adoption of a consensus model mirrors wider developments in Nigeria’s opposition politics, where parties are attempting to reduce internal fragmentation before the elections.

Yobe State has remained a stronghold of the APC and its predecessor political structures for more than two decades, making the 2027 governorship election a significant political test for opposition parties in the North-East.

Analysts, however, note that growing political discussions around governance, youth participation, and economic challenges may reshape voter expectations ahead of the polls.

The ADC’s move in Yobe also comes amid increasing national visibility for the party, as several political actors across the country continue exploring alternative coalition platforms outside the traditional major parties.

Political observers say Geidam’s candidacy could position the ADC as a more competitive opposition force in the state, particularly if broader coalition talks among opposition parties gain momentum before 2027.

Meanwhile, the APC is expected to begin its own succession consultations as Governor Mai Mala Buni approaches the end of his tenure.

With major parties gradually unveiling their political strategies, analysts say the contest for Yobe State may become one of the key governorship battles to watch ahead of the 2027 general elections.
