Former West Ham goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko dies aged 64

Former West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers and Czech Republic goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko has died at the age of 64 after battling cancer.

Miklosko, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2021, withdrew from treatment in December 2024. He returned to West Ham’s London Stadium days later to watch the Premier League match against Liverpool, receiving a hero’s welcome from supporters.

The Czech goalkeeper made almost 400 appearances for West Ham between 1990 and 1998 and became a hugely popular figure among the club’s supporters.

His name continued to be regularly sung by West Ham fans long after his playing career at the club ended, reflecting the affection in which he was held.

Miklosko later returned to West Ham as a goalkeeping coach, continuing his association with the club.

West Ham confirmed his death in a statement paying tribute to the former goalkeeper.

“It is with deep and profound sadness that West Ham United announces the passing of legendary former goalkeeper and coach, Luděk Miklosko,” the club said.

“Rest in peace Ludek, our beloved, inspirational goalkeeper and gentle giant of a man.”

Miklosko also represented Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic during his international career and spent time with QPR after leaving West Ham.

His death marks the loss of one of West Ham’s most respected former players, with the club and its supporters remembering him for his performances, character and lasting contribution to the Hammers.
