No fewer than 29 people have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack by gunmen on Guyaku and Telabala communities in Gombi Local Government Area, where residents had gathered to watch a local football match at a primary school.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed the area at about 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, arriving in large numbers and opening fire indiscriminately on spectators and passersby.

The attack reportedly threw the communities into chaos, as residents fled in different directions in a desperate bid to escape the gunfire.

According to locals, the football match had drawn a sizeable crowd, including youths and families, when the attackers struck. Survivors described scenes of panic and confusion, with many people sustaining gunshot wounds while others were trampled during the stampede that followed.

Community leaders said the death toll could rise as some of the injured are in critical condition at nearby medical facilities. Security operatives were later deployed to the area, but residents claimed the attackers had already fled by the time help arrived.

In response to the tragedy, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri visited the affected communities to assess the damage and commiserate with grieving families. During the visit, he reportedly condemned the killings, describing them as senseless and unacceptable.

The governor assured residents that his administration would work closely with security agencies to track down those responsible and bring them to justice. He also pledged support for the injured and families of the victims.

The latest incident has heightened fears among residents of Gombi LGA and surrounding areas, where sporadic attacks have raised concerns about safety and the need for improved security presence.
