Midnight gunmen raid OOU Engineering Campus, students injured in hostels attack

Panic gripped Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ogun State after a shocking midnight attack by suspected armed men left several students injured and others traumatised.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at the university’s College of Engineering campus in Ibogun. According to eyewitness accounts, more than a dozen gunmen reportedly stormed student hostels, firing gunshots sporadically and causing widespread confusion and fear.

Students said the sound of gunfire jolted much awake, triggering chaos as residents ran in different directions in search of safety. Cries for help echoed across the campus as some students fled their rooms while others hid to avoid being harmed.

Witnesses described the night as terrifying, with attackers allegedly wielding firearms and machetes. In the ensuing commotion, several students reportedly sustained machete cuts and other injuries.

The assailants were said to have carted away valuables, including mobile phones, laptops, and cash. A vehicle was also reportedly stolen during the raid but was later found abandoned after it ran out of fuel.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command said security operatives were promptly mobilised to the scene. Authorities disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer of Ibogun Division, alongside the Area Commander, led a response team to the campus following distress calls.

Police officials stated that investigations have commenced to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack. They assured students and residents that measures are being intensified to prevent a recurrence and restore calm within the university community.

Meanwhile, tension persists across the campus, with many students calling for improved security presence, enhanced surveillance, and stricter access control around hostels and surrounding areas.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of students living in off-campus and satellite campuses, as stakeholders urge swift action to ensure accountability and strengthen security infrastructure.
