INEC publishes 2027 preliminary voters’ register online after public concerns
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has made the preliminary register of voters for the 2027 general election available online following concerns over public access, allowing registered voters to inspect their details ahead of the publication of the final register in December.
The commission announced the decision in a statement issued on Monday, October 26, 2026, by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee.
INEC said the register could be accessed through its dedicated portal, display.inecnigeria.org, as an additional measure to complement the physical display previously conducted nationwide.
The commission had displayed the preliminary register at registration areas across the country from October 9 to 15, giving registered voters an opportunity to verify their particulars and submit claims or objections where necessary.
However, the online publication followed concerns from Nigerians and electoral stakeholders about the register’s accessibility. Premium Times had reported that INEC missed the statutory deadline for making the register available online for public scrutiny under Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2026.
In its statement, INEC said it had taken note of the concerns and decided to upload the same preliminary register earlier displayed physically.
The commission said it was continuing to process claims and objections arising from the exercise in preparation for the certification and publication of the final register of voters on December 15, 2026.
Section 19 of the Electoral Act 2026 provides for public scrutiny of the voters’ register, including publication on INEC’s official website or another website established by the commission for that purpose.
INEC said the online access was intended to widen public participation in the verification process and strengthen transparency and confidence in the electoral system.
The commission urged Nigerians and other stakeholders to remain engaged with the process, reaffirming its commitment to implementing the electoral law and delivering credible elections.
