The Kaduna State High Court has denied the bail application filed by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in a ruling that marks a significant turn in the ongoing legal proceedings against him.

Delivering the decision on Tuesday, Justice Darius Khobo held that granting bail at this stage could jeopardise ongoing investigations. The court ruled that there was a likelihood the former governor could interfere with the investigative process if released from custody.

Justice Khobo noted that while bail is a constitutional right, it is not automatic and must be granted based on judicial discretion, particularly where the court is convinced that releasing a defendant could undermine justice or obstruct law enforcement efforts

Although specific details of the charges before the court were not extensively discussed during the ruling, the judge emphasised that the integrity of the investigation must be preserved.

The prosecution had earlier argued that releasing the former governor could pose risks to witnesses and evidence, a position the court appeared to uphold.

Defence counsel is expected to review the ruling and may explore further legal options, including a possible appeal.

The case has continued to attract national attention, with political stakeholders and legal analysts closely monitoring developments as proceedings move forward
