The lingering leadership crisis within the Labour Party has intensified following the decision of the party’s embattled national chairman, Julius Abure, to challenge the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal at the Supreme Court.

Abure rejected the appellate court’s ruling, which upheld the position of Nenadi Usman in the protracted dispute over the party’s leadership structure.

The Court of Appeal had earlier struck out Abure’s appeal, describing it as an abuse of court process and effectively affirming Usman’s standing in the contentious power struggle.

In a swift reaction, Abure maintained that the appellate court’s decision was flawed and insisted that the matter was far from over.

He disclosed plans to approach the Supreme Court, Nigeria’s apex judicial body, to seek redress and overturn the verdict.

The development marks a fresh twist in the internal wrangling that has rocked the Labour Party in recent months. The dispute has created parallel claims to leadership within the party, leading to confusion among members and stakeholders across various states.

Political observers say the continued legal battle risks further fragmenting the party’s structure at a time when cohesion is crucial for strengthening its opposition credentials. The crisis has already generated divisions among party executives, lawmakers, and supporters, with each faction laying claim to legitimacy.

With Abure now set to test the matter at the Supreme Court, attention turns to how quickly the apex court will take up the case and whether its eventual decision will finally bring closure to the dispute.

Until then, the Labour Party remains caught in a legal and political standoff that continues to shape its internal dynamics and broader role in Nigeria’s political landscape.
