Lookman delighted after scoring in Atlético Madrid’s win over Manchester United
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has expressed delight after scoring in Atlético Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League.
The Nigerian international came off the bench to score Atlético’s second goal in the 79th minute on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid.
Speaking after the match, Lookman said he was pleased to contribute to the team’s victory and praised his teammates for their performance.
“I’m very happy to come and help the team. It’s important. The guys put on a big performance before I came on, so it’s easy to come into the team and play. I’m very happy with the team’s performance,” he said in an interview with CBS Sports Golazo, as reported by Legit.ng.
Lookman also disclosed that Atlético manager Diego Simeone had encouraged him to bring energy to the game and contribute both defensively and offensively.
“Just bring the energy, try to help the team, defensively of course and offensively when I get the chance to do so,” he said.
Atlético took the lead just 53 seconds into the encounter through Pablo Barrios, who finished a move created by Álex Baena.
Manchester United had opportunities to equalise, with captain Bruno Fernandes striking the crossbar, but the visitors struggled to convert their chances.
United’s task became more difficult in the 74th minute when defender Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review after a challenge on Atlético forward Jonathan David.
Five minutes later, Lookman capitalised on a rebound after United goalkeeper Senne Lammens saved David’s attempt, finishing from close range to secure the Spanish side’s victory.
The goal capped an influential substitute appearance for the Nigerian forward, who had entered the game in the 71st minute.
Lookman’s goal ended a six-match run without scoring, according to reports by Legit.ng and Soccernet.ng.
The strike offered a timely boost for the 28-year-old as Atlético continue their Champions League campaign.
The victory gave Diego Simeone’s side their first win of the 2026-27 Champions League league phase, while Manchester United’s poor run continued.
Lookman will hope to build on the performance as Atlético turn their attention to their upcoming domestic and European fixtures.
